DALL-E

Superhero fatigue is a term now used by critics who believe that the superhero film genre has hit a dead end. The term can also be used in the world of comic books because there are just too many characters. Many of these characters have weird, disturbing, useless, plain disgusting and odd superpowers too.

You know superheroes who fly, wear technological suits of armor, or wield a magic hammer, even if you don’t read comic books. Ever heard of the superhero who mind-controls squirrels? Do you know about the superhero who controls six feet of extra skin cells like a hygienically disgusting version of Mr. Fantastic?

Have you heard of the superhero who poops ice cream?

Check out this list of 10 superheroes with weird, disturbing, and odd superpowers.

Marrow

Sarah Rushman grew up as a member of the Morlocks, mutants who live in communities and tunnels under New York City. Sarah’s odd superpowers include the mutant ability to aggressively grow bones that break through the skin and even cover some parts of her body. She could break off bone shards to use as weapons or use the bones as armor. Marrow also had super strength and a healing factor. Although Marrow became an X-Men in the comics for a while, the character never took off in popularity.

ForgetMeNot

DALL-E

ForgetMeNot is kind of the Schrödinger’s Cat of the X-Men – he exists and doesn’t exist simultaneously. His odd superpowers make you forget he exists the moment you see him. His powers also caused people nearby to have memory gaps and the odd feeling they forgot something they should have remembered. He was an X-Men in the comic books from 2014 to 2023 with the team unaware. Professor X had to create psychic reminders to remember ForgetMeNot. After having his power suppressed the character was recently killed in the comics.

Arm-Fall-Off-Boy

Floyd Belkin is a superhero with laughably odd superpowers. He can detach his own arms and use the limbs as weapons. He tried to join the Legion of Super-Heroes (an intergalactic super team in DC Comics) in the 31st century and failed. However, he was able to create his own super team and assist the Legion from time to time. In the 2021 James Gunn-directed film The Suicide Squad, Arm-Fall-Off-Boy was reimagined as The Detachable Kid and portrayed by actor Nathan Fillion.

Squirrel Girl

DALL-E

Doreen Allene Green, also known as Squirrel Girl, was created to be a light-hearted counter to the gritty realism of mainstream comic books. She is a young college student who finds out that she is a mutant with the power to communicate and control squirrels. Squirrel Girl is an Avengers ally and often works as a nanny for the superteam. Even though the character is light-hearted, she has defeated Deadpool, Kraven the Hunter, Dr. Doom, MODOK, Galactus, and even Thanos in the comic books.

Matter-Eater Lad

DALL-E

Tenzil Kem, also known as Matter-Eater Lad, is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legion is a group of intergalactic superheroes in DC Comics who operate in the 30th and 31st centuries. His superpower is the ability to eat any form of matter. In the comic books, Kem has eaten indestructible materials, metal, guns, and even an energy blast discharged from a weapon. Additionally, his odd superpowers are not a mutation. Kem comes from a planet called Bismoll where everyone has this ability.

Maggott

DALL-E

Japheth is a South African native and mutant with the power to transform his internal digestive system into two gigantic slugs. The slugs leaves via his stomach, eat objects and things, and then reenters his stomach. The slugs nourish Japheth and give him enhanced speed, strength, and stamina. However, Japheth’s skin turns blue and his eyes turn red during this process. Sometimes Japheth’s slugs creepily lay on each of his shoulders. Maggott also has the power to read the psychic imprint of an area and can intuit what has or will happen in an area.

Soft Serve

If you’re eating while reading this, stop for a moment. In 2021, artist Bob Quinn created an X-Men character mostly as a fan-fiction and visual Easter Egg goof. So, Quinn announced the creation of Soft Serve on X (formerly Twitter) back in 2021. Soft Serve is a mutant with the power to poop ice cream – that’s it. The character has only been seen in the background of some comics and is not on a team. Quinn later revised the origin of the character, implying that her body is a living conduit that channels ice cream from another dimension. OK, continue eating if you can.

Skin

DALL-E

In the 1990s, Marvel Comics was keen to create a new generation of X-Men. Generation X, a team of new young mutants, was marketed as that team. One of the Generation X mutants was Angelo Espinosa, also known as Skin. Skin was born with six feet of extra skin cells which he could control and stretch, like a mutant version of Mr. Fantastic. Skin has grey skin and the appearance of a deformed human wax figure. His odd superpowers did not make him popular with readers.

Chamber

odd superpowers

DALL-E

Jonothon Evan Starsmore, also known as Chamber, was another Generation X member. Born in London, Chamber has the power to expel powerful energy blasts from his chest. Unfortunately, the first time his powers manifested, his upper chest, lower jaw, and the bottom half of his face were destroyed. An energy furnace perpetually glows in his upper chest. Chamber wears a scarf to hide it. The character was always sullen, moody, and hard to connect with for readers due to his disturbing aesthetics.

Fluff

odd superpowers

DALL-E

This is a mutant who unwittingly emphasizes the need for maintaining good personal hygiene. Fluff is a mutant with the power to generate unending amounts of belly button lint and fuzz as well as control its chemical composition. The character was part of an X-Men affiliate team called X-Cellent. Fluff was killed off in the comic books in 2022 with no recent news of any impending resurrection. His odd superpowers made him unrelatable and weird.

Any Super Hero Could Have Odd Super Powers

“Odd,” is very much a relative term. What can seem weird to one reader can seem interesting to another. Not every superhero can have super strength or the power of flight, so comic book artists and writers must get creative to make their characters stand out. Discover old or new comic books and judge for yourself.
