The thin line between sanity and vanity is transgressed only when the first letter is swapped out. Vanity will only devolve into absurd delusion when sanity is completely forsaken and compromised. Before 2008, a person’s sanity or cool quotient was questioned if they read comic books. But not that comic book media is cool in some circles, people vainly compete to show who is the biggest geek. And that is why comic book fans have such an affinity for comic book wall mounts.

People like to show off what they own and cherish. As long as materialism doesn’t become your sole goal in life, it isn’t a problem. In fact, it is a way of life for most people. You can tell a lot about people depending on what they want to show off.

The problem is that while most people like comic book media, they may be casual or non-comic book readers. We live in a generation of comic book fans who may think its weird to cherish a comic book, even though they love comic book media.

As a devout comic book fan, I think some of the things other people cherish and mount on their walls are weird too. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The severed heads of hunted animals
  • Sports memorabilia
  • Sand from vacation visits
  • Random items owned or touched by celebrities now considered “sacred”
  • Model aircraft
  • Odd, generic, and uninteresting paintings (Dogs Playing Poker)

The topic of this article is people placing favored items on wall mounts, but showing of material items isn’t just limited to wall mounts. Some people show off their cars, houses, jewelry, and designer clothes featuring some designer’s name as sacred items. And the degree is which they show off reveals the line crossed between vanity and sanity.

Comic Book Wall Mounts – But Why Though?

The same rings true for comic book fans who show off their favored comic books with comic book wall mounts. If you really think about it, even a picture frame is a wall mount that displays something that we are proud of. And it is not always pictures of loved ones or people. Some people put pictures of cars or celebrities, who are strangers, on a wall prominently for others to see.

Comic book fans place their favorite comics on comic book wall mounts for a variety of reasons that is personal to them. Not just because it is a comic book.

Before we talk about the various comic book wall mounts that are on the market, let’s examine why a comic book fan would place a comic book on a wall mount. To find the best comic book wall mounts for your needs, you must first consider which of your favorite comic book you would want to display.

After all, while you may have dozens, hundreds, or thousands of comic books, you may only have limited wall space to mount one or a few comic books.

Why Would You Place a Favored Comic Book on a Wall Mount?

This is one of my most favored comic books, Secret Wars #1, first published in May 1984. It is a story of an alien called the Beyonder who transports Earth heroes to an alien planet called Battleworld to fight. This comic book will inspire an Avengers film called “Secret Wars,” within the next 3 or 4 years.

But while many comic book fans now only know about these stories from comic book films, I was reading them when I was 8 or 9.

This is my personal copy of Secret Wars #1, signed by the original writer Jim Shooter. I met Jim Shooter when I was a teenager in the early 1990s. I was writing for a teen publication called New Youth Connections and one of my editors arranged for me to meet and interview him.

Art by Mike Zeck. (This is my personal copy of Secret Wars #1. Writer Jim Shooter personally signed it for me when I was 17.)

I haven’t got it graded yet, but it could be worth anywhere between $80 to $400. Jim Shooter is a very controversial writer, depending on who you ask, but his signing this comic was a pivotal moment in my life. I went from reading this famous comic book story as an 8-year-old to meeting the guy who wrote it a decade later.

This is a comic book I would put on comic book wall mounts.

But the reason why a comic book fan puts a favored issue on comic book wall mounts varies. A comic book can be sacred because of the storyline, writer, artist, era in which it was published, signature, rarity, and numerous other reasons.

The point is that if you post a comic book on a wall mount, then it is special to you and you want others to see it. Make sure that you top load or slab your comic before you wall mount it.

If you really want to protect your comic book, then have it professionally authenticated, graded, and slabbed by a third-party verification company before you wall mount it.
