In most cases it doesn’t pay to procrastinate, but in the case of scoring great deals on school supplies, procrastinating until the Labor Day sales can mean some major savings (there are also some other ways to obtain school supplies). While stores have discounted back to school basics since the beginning of August, it’s over the Labor Day weekend when they do their deep discounting to move any stock they have remaining so they can make room for merchandise for the coming holiday season. Most schools have already started and most parents have done all their back to school shopping, so that means parents can often score huge deals on schools supplies of 75% off or more.
Here are some of the school supply basics you want to keep your eyes open for which can be heavily discounted:
- Lunch bags
- Pencil/Pen cases
- Pencil sharpener
- Colored pencils
- Glue sticks
- Loose leaf paper
- Watercolor paint
- Index cards
- Book covers
In addition to the basics, you can also do some smart shopping during this time for things which are labeled as “back to school,” but which you can use for other things. For example, anti-bacterial sanitizer gel and pocket tissues are often placed in the back to school area of the store, and will be discounted there, while still having their regular price in the regular sections of the store. Since these can be used throughout the year by all family members and not just those attending school, it can be a great time to stock up on them. Anything that has a school theme which you can utilize for different things is fair game and a great way to save a bundle. This makes it a great opportunity to stock up on many office supplies or home business supplies for the year as well.
In the same vein, it can be a great time to stock up on back to school basics for next year, or replacements you know you’re going to need throughout the year. While it might be risky buying a character backpack a year early since kids’ tastes can change, you know they will need pencils, pens and other basics no matter what. If you have the space to store them until next year, stocking up now can save a bundle of money, and save you from the back to school crowds next year as well. You also will save big if something gets lost and need to be replaced during the year since you already have a supply. Since you usually have to pay full retail price for supplies in the middle of the school year, having a stockpile of greatly discounted supplies is a wonderful money saver.
