It’s becoming a trend to see discounts beginning to appear at the beginning of the summer months on the latest iPhone models. This happens because many consumers take a wait-and-see attitude with the knowledge that Apple usually launches new models in September. Many expect the launch of the iPhone 6 to happen later this year. With so many expecting the debut of the new model, it can be difficult for retailers to sell the current models on their shelves. To help entice these consumers to upgrade, summer sales often begin to show up in the later part of June.
Walmart announced today it’s decreasing the price of the iPhone 5s from $149 to $99. The iPhone 5c will also be discounted to $29, from its former price of $49. These discounted prices do require a two-year activation on either AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. Both the 5s and 5c models are the entry level models and come with 16 GB of memory. These deals are only available at Walmart stores, not online. That puts Walmart’s iPhone 5s price at a 50% discount over what Apple sells it for in their stores, and over 70% off the list price for the iPhone 5c.
Walmart isn’t the only retailer beginning to offer iPhone discounts. Costco is selling their iPhone 5s 16 GB models at a starting price of $77.99 which is available online and at the warehouse. This compares with the $199 price that the iPhone 5s 16 GB model retails for at at phone service provider stores.
Another iPhone summer deal making the rounds is from T-Mobile. They are currently offering an iPhone 5s seven day free trial which they call a “test drive.” If you sign up for a T-Mobile plan, they will send you an iPhone 5s for free which you can use for seven days (the time starts ticking upon sign-up), but it will place a $699.99 plus tax hold on your credit or debit card. If you decide that you don’t want to keep the phone, you can return it in good condition to any T-Mobile store at no cost.
While these deals might be tempting, you’re likely to see even better deals in the months to come, and certainly if Apple does debut the new iPhone 6 later this year. As with most gadgets, the more patient you are, the better deal you’re likely to strike when you do decide to upgrade.
