The first shop, opened way back in 1978, was a former gas station in Burlington Vermont. That gas station needed to be renovated into the now famous first Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream shop. Every year after, they have been giving away a free cone on their anniversary. Anyone who stops by a shop between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM today can pick up their free cone. There is no additional purchase necessary.
It’s a huge event for the 742 scoop shops across 26 countries that participate in this promotion. The event is so popular that shops have to stockpile ice-cream the week before in order to have enough on hand for all the people that come out for free cone day each year.
If you do plan to make the trip to your local store, give yourself some extra time. This event is hugely popular (who doesn’t want free ice-cream?), and there are often long lines to wait through in order to get your free scoop. If you have a busy day and don’t have time to wait in line, this event is probably not for you.
On the other hand, many people make it into a free entertainment event. If you know going in that it’s going to take time to get your free cone, you can enjoy the happy atmosphere with all the smiling faces getting their ice-cream at no cost. Being part of the event can be half the fun if you know what you’re getting yourself into.
While you can always go for your old and reliable favorite flavor, you might also want to take the opportunity to try one of the newest flavors from the iconic pair. These include Hazed & Confused (a combination of Hazelnut & chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge swirl), Salted Caramel Blondie (ice-cream with blonde brownies and a salted caramel core) or Cotton Candy (cotton candy ice-cream with lots of cotton candy pieces mixed in). No matter what flavor you choose, you and your kids are bound to leave the store happy. Even better, your wallet won’t be any lighter than when you entered.
