The Best Items to Buy After Christmas Sales to Save Money

After Christmas sales can be a great opportunity to save money on products (they can also be a good was to make some extra money), but the key to making it true savings is that you buy items that you actually need and which you were planning to buy in the first place. If you end up buying something simply because it was deeply discounted, but otherwise you would never have bought it, then that purchase has cost you money no mater how inexpensive it was. On the other hand, if you know you’ll need/use it in the future and you would’ve bought it at some point anyway, after Christmas sales can be a great way of saving quite a bit of money. Here are some products that you can pick up on the cheap beginning the 26th of December.

Gift Cards

After Xmas is a great time to stock up on gift cards from the secondary market to any store where you purchase merchandise on a regular basis. Many people receive gift cards for the holidays to retailers they won’t use, or they would simply rather have the cash. Since there are a lot of these  cards hitting the secondary market all at the same time, right after Christmas is one of the best times to get the deepest discounts. It’s one of the few times during the year when there’s significantly more sellers than buyers.

Christmas wine is still considered a novelty item to most people, but the wine industry is learning that selling their product with a seasonal theme is a great way to sell more of it with a higher price tag. A larger variety and better wines are slowly beginning to come out with Christmas and seasonal themed wines. While the wine companies can make some extra money before the holiday, the wines will get discounted once the holiday has passed. This gives you a great opportunity to pick up some wine at a discount as long as you don’t care what the bottle looks like. Since wine keeps well, it can also be a great way to pick up generic holiday gifts for future years for those unexpected situations where you might need to bring a gift on short notice.

Christmas beer, unlike Xmas wine, has moved passed the novelty stage and is a full-on marketing design strategy these days. Even better, many craft beer companies come out with special holiday beer. After the 25th, these six-packs and cases will be discounted to make room for other beer. The beer tastes exactly the same, it just happens to be a day older. It’s a great way to get some seasonal beer at a great price.

Baby’s First Items

If you have close friends or family who are expecting a baby, it’s financially smart to get something for their first Christmas. The sales beginning the 26th will give you a great opportunity to find something wonderful to give at a steep discount over what you would have to pay next year during the holiday shopping season.

Anything on eBay

Most people are tired of shopping, and many people don’t have as much money left to spend, so if there is something that you have been wanting to get on the secondary market, there’s a good chance that you can get it at a better price right after Christmas than at many other times of the year. There are just fewer people bidding and those who are, have less money. It’s worth checking out and hopefully you can score a deal on the item you want for a price that you thought you would never be able to get.

Gift Sets

Whether it’s food or other items, holiday gift sets can be an extra great bargain because all the items have usually already been discounted to some degree to make it into a set. When their price gets lowered even more after Xmas day, you can score even more savings.

Toys & Small Gifts

If you will need to get gifts for nephews, nieces, your children’s friends’ birthdays, etc., this can be a great time to stock up on them. Toy retailers will be trying to reduce their current stock, and you should be able to pick up some quality gifts for much less than if you ended up buying the same or similar gift right before the event.

If you have a favorite candy, or use candy in your baking, stock up on the Xmas themed candy of your choice. The packaging may have Santa and reindeer on it, but the candy inside is the exact same as the candy in the regular package — just 50% to 90% off the regular retail price.

Gift Boxes & Tissue Paper

In addition to Christmas themes, stores try to clear out solid-colored gift boxes and tissue paper (white, red and green), which can be used in many other situations. This is especially true with the white tissue paper and boxes. As long as they don’t come with holiday patterns on them and you know you will need some in the coming year, it’s a great time to stock up on them.

Paper Goods

Much like gift boxes and tissue paper, paper goods like cups, plates, napkins that are in the solid colors of red, white and green will often be discounted with the holiday themed goods. In many cases, you can see the exact same items in the non-holiday section of the store still priced at their regular retail price. If you don’t care about the colors of these items, you can use them at any time, and colors like red can be used for other holidays, such as Valentine’s Day and the 4th of July.

Storage Bins

If you are in need of more storage bins, the day after Xmas is a great time to stock up as long as you don’t mind them being green or red. Since most of these end up in the basement, attic or garage rafters, the color of the bin doesn’t usually matter all that much, and you can get them greatly discounted once the 26th of December arrives.

Tape & Scissors

Most stores stock a lot more tape and scissors than normal during the holiday season, so when the holiday gift wrap goes on sale, so do these items. Tape is always good to stock up on if you don’t have extra, and the same goes with an extra pair of scissors.

Christmas Stuff

If you have the room to store it, this is a great time to stock up on anything  you noticed you didn’t have or that needs replacing with a Christmas theme: wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, gift bags, stockings, cards, holiday decor, lights, etc. If you are in the market for a faux Christmas tree, this is the time to get it. If you need more ornaments, or you buy yearly ornaments, stock up. You should be able to purchase all this stuff at 50%+ off its regular retail price.

If you shop mainly at large discount retailers, you will need to go early on the 26th to get the best deals. These stores discount quickly to move the merchandise out as soon as possible for new inventory, and it will all be gone in a few days, with the best stuff gone by the afternoon of the 26th. If you like to score your deals on a less hectic schedule, visit other retail outlets like drug stores, grocery stores, home improvement stores and mom & pop shops. These outlets usually discount the items slowly over time meaning the best deals will be available a couple of weeks after Christmas has ended.
