GOOD ADVICE but please don't be fooled into thinking that if you exercise regularly and eat right you can avoid cancer, dementia and other illnesses. Yes you can mitigate the risk but these illnesses can happen no matter how well you take care of yourself!!!! The fact is that you will age and no matter how well you take care of yourself, the body breaks down over time. I see people like this every day who never thought they would get old or sick because they ate healthy and exercised, stayed active, etc and thus they did not plan for it. Now they or their significant other has Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease or heart disease or some type of cancer and they can't believe it, they just can't believe it!!

Yes you meet people like the lady you described and she is an inspiration but I can tell you there are lots of inactive people out there who do all the wrong things who live a long life and we shake our heads and wonder how they defy the odds.

Best advice is to look into long-term care insurance, as you age consider downsizing or moving into a community with lots of senior amenities, make a living will, get a healthcare power of attorney with somebody you trust and hold on because aging is not for the weak of heart or mind!

So true! I have friends who are the same age as me and who seem to be always at the doctors because of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure - all related to weight and being sedentary. I offered a stroll with me and my dawg but not taken up in two years!

Being as fit and healthy as possible is also a help in fighting what illness life might throw at you. The colonoscopy idea is a good one. I was sent for one because a grandparent had died from bowel cancer - sure enough there were lots of polyps of both kinds. All removed now and regular checks keep them under control. Makes sense to do these thing

Interesting article. One nontraditional way to prepare for retirement that can have financial and non-financial benefits is investing in a clean energy system such as solar. These systems can have great financial returns and installing one can provide environmental benefits along with psychological satisfaction.
