I actually start my Christmas shopping preparation the day after Christmas ends. This is when all the old Christmas stuff goes on sale, so I pick up as much as I can but I need so that I'm fully prepared when the next season comes around. It's also great time to pick up all the small gifts that you might need to give to somebody unexpectedly. I keep a collection of good ornaments that I can give to anybody if they unexpectedly give me a gift and I haven't purchased one for them.

If you have a credit union account you can sign up for another savings deduction and designate it for Christmas. Another way is to use layaway where it's available. You can also get one of those cards that you load yourself and everytime you have a little extra, load it unto the card and use that for Christmas. There are lots of ways out there to start saving for Christmas or buying ahead, just use your imagination and see what's available. I want to do it myself because I hate to shop too much at Christmas when the stores are crowded and the days are ticking away.

My family's secret savings tip is to do a secret Santa exchange instead of getting gifts for everyone. Secret Santa is a no brainer way to save 90% of your spending for the holidays.

We start in the summer so that there is ample time to select a meaningful gift for the person whose name we have drawn. While on vacation we may see something special for the person whose name we have drawn. So planning ahead can help save money, so can reducing the size of the list of people you intend to buy gifts for. So, yes, Make Your List Now and then buy for only one of them. We do this with each side of our family and now that we have kids, the cousins are now in their own secret santa pool. We hope this helps them grow up with a sense of fun around gift giving and not the expectation that they will receive a gift from each family. I also work in the corporate world where there is a lot of activity (work and social) planned at the last minute during the holidays. Many times we have opted to use secret santa to add fun to the mix of gift giving during the holidays.

Those are great ones! A couple of years ago I found a gorgeous 9 foot Christmas tree on Craigslist for $40. I am not one of those people who likes to think about Christmas all year round, and it felt weird buying it in August, but when Christmas time came I was STOKED! :) Each year I say I'm going to start saving for Christmas and I don't. This year I am going to, and I love your ideas for selling things now and saving for Christmas. Another great one is to sign up for swagbucks and accumulate Amazon gift cards. I did that last year and bought quite a few gifts with my "free" amazon gift cards. It was great! Thanks for posting this. You always have great articles to read.
