I love taking my nephew and niece out to places not because I think they will remember it, but because I enjoy their enjoyment of it so much. Their fascination with the turtles at the zoo was incredibly adorable, and I cherished it then and now. Remember also that explicit memories are not the only kind available. Your son may have learned important lessons in his sport by his participation in that event.

When I got older, I realized that my parents had very different memories of certain events from mine! LOL (Well, at least my mother did!)

I remember the duck boats at Wisconsin Dells and my mom remembered my brother and I being whiney (sp?) and general little pains in the toosh. I remember Sea World and Sammy the Whale (a stuffed animal that was a favorite companion when I was little) who came home with us after our visit there. My memories were more the little things, like looking for shells on the beach and fascination with ocean waves, than where we actually were at the time.

On the other hand, I remember coming home from church on Christmas Eve and going for a walk around the block with my brother while Santa delivered our Christmas presents (in our house, poor Santa made 2 trips -- one Christmas Eve with presents and one while we were asleep to deliver stockings) and seeing Santa putting packages under a neighbor's tree through their livingroom window. I made my brother walk really slow so that Santa would have plenty of time to make it to our house... so slowly that my parents were beginning to wonder where we were! LOL When I told my mom about that, she had no memory of it at all.

I think that children's perspectives are just different. Your sons may not remember specific instances, but they'll always know that you did things with them and were there.
