Orson Welles advised that “Nobody who takes on anything big and tough can afford to be modest”. Anti-tax agitator Vivien Kellems was quick to proclaim, “Of course I’m a publicity hound. Aren’t all crusaders? How can you accomplish anything unless people know what you are trying to do?”

Face it. If you want to succeed in just about anything, you need to get your name out there. Publicity does not have to be national in scope. It can be as local as a conversation with a neighbor, but a lot of people are not comfortable with those ty

    Spot on! I believe that you have touched on all of the important factors David regarding self promoting. I agree with Ann on particularly liking the ‘don’t overdo’ and to ‘be sensitive’ topics, but I also believe that the ‘be sincere’ one is just as important as well! (I have recently come across some that were promoting themselves and were quite insincere and it showed through like a beacon!)
    I would like to add to be well informed and knowledgeable to the list because if you are not completely at your best in the subject, all of the other points will be of no use and you will have spent time in vain!

    I think that a dose of self-deprecating humor can help with a pitch (if you don’t dis yourself overly much). You are often allowed to say things in a humorous way that you would never be really permitted to say that candidly otherwise…
