11 Actions You Can Take To Improve Your Airplane Experience

When we pay so much money for plane tickets, why does the experience have to be so miserable? Well, maybe it doesn’t have to be. While this article won’t tell you how to maintain your sanity in a grounded plane for seven hours, it will give you some ideas for making the best of a relatively ordinary flight.

    With the seat choosing: When my husband and I fly, we are automatically assigned seats next to each other, so that one person has the middle seat (when flying larger planes). I now go and select the aisle and window seats, leaving the middle seat open. This decreases the chance of all three seats taken, and often we get the row to ourselves. Even if someone is assigned there, they have always been more than willing to trade with one of us!

  2. I’ve been in the habit for years of bringing a hoodie. Now that airlines have cut out blankets and pillows, some kind of jacket or sweater will keep you warm if you get chilly or roll up nicely to fit in the crook of your neck.

    And don’t get annoyed with weather delays – no amount of ranting is going to un-cancel your flight.

    Since more and more airlines are charging for snacks and meals, make sure you bring your own food. I know this has always been a common sense tip, but will the security of today, I’ve streamlined my carry-ons and forgot little treats for the trip my last two flights. I ended up being hungry (and not willing to shell out more money, albeit only $7, to the airline).

    Bring a sarong or shawl — it will be great for keeping warm (like a blanket or scarf) or for scrunching up to form a little pillow.

    But most of all: just try to find calm, even in the chaos of the airport or the confined place of the plane. Finding peace within yourself will make the whole experience much better!

    Due to last weeks crash-landing in NYC, I would recommend not following the advice to put headphones on immediately to put on headphones to be “free of those constant intercom announcements and the other obnoxious noises associated with flying”

    Two other tips I would recommend would be to be aware of how long it takes to get your carryon luggage arranged. If you are seated near the front, you are holding up any passengers who may be trying to get past you, and thus, everyone else behind you. Finally, just relax, there is no need to stress yourself out, as soon as you make it to the plane, there isn’t a whole lot you can do to make sure you make your next connection, so just enjoy the time.
