I have to admit that I work for a company that deals in a lot of "misc." debt, and this happened across our desks not more than two months ago. I didn't personally handle the case, but I do know that the poor guy that had been divorced from his wife for more than 15 years still got slapped with the account balance and was held responsible for it, because he has never taken his name off the house and she had defaulted and skipped out. It's really important for people to remember that just because a divorce is final is doesn't change the names on accounts like the house, or beneficiary names.

Ouch...like divorce isn't bad enough. It just goes to show, that you can't even depend on "experts" to take care of you. If you want something done right, you better do some research and make sure all your bases are covered. You don't have to become an expert, but you need to know enough to be able to tell if the person you hire is giving you reliable advice.
