Holiday Tipping Rules ($10 Question)
With the holiday season almost upon us (or already in full swing if you accept what retailers are telling us), what are your holiday tipping rules? I had a quite lively debate about this with a group of friends who had a wide variety of opinions on the subject, and I’m sure the readers here have many more.
According to Consumer Reports, the following percentage of people give holiday tips to these workers:
- Child-care provider (nanny, au pair, daytime sitter): 62%
- Housekeeper/cleaning person: 61%
- Child’s teacher: 59%
- Hairdresser or stylist: 54%
- Newspaper carrier: 47%
- Manicurist/pedicurist: 44%
- Barber: 40%
- Gardener/lawn-care crew: 32%
- Mail carrier: 31%
- School-bus driver: 31%
- Apartment building caretaker (superintendent, janitor, custodian) 30%
- Fitness trainer/instructor: 26%
- Sanitation/recycling collector: 15%
Do you tip extra for the holidays and who do you tip? Do you have a formal tipping plan, or just wing it on your feelings at the time? Do you think that tipping extra at the holidays is appropriate?

This is a new series that I’m going to begin where your comment might be worth $10. Here is how it works.
How You Enter: Simply leave a comment to this question. Be sure to include a working email where I can contact you if you happen to win.
Requirements To Win: You must have an ING online bank account and an invite you can send me that hasn’t been used.
How Winner Will Be Chosen: by random number
If you have an ING bank account, you were given 25 invites to give to people. If your comment is chosen as the winner, you will send me one of your ING invites and I will convert it for you. When it is converted, you automatically receive $10 into your account. The winner will be chosen directly before I place up the next $10 question in the series. The actual length may vary, but at least once a week.
If you do not have an ING bank account, you are still free to comment, but you will not win anything if your comment happens to be chosen - in this case another random comment will be chosen.

I don’t do a lot of extra tipping during the holidays, but I do tip the gardener extra because he does an excellent job throughout the year and is quick to take care of things when I ask.
