In her book, If You Want to Write, Barbara Ueland states, “Families are great murderers of the creative impulse…” This statement is bold, but unfortunately true for many. Many have had family members shoot down great ideas as too good to be true, too difficult or maybe even stupid.

Do you want to start a business, go back to school, tackle debt, save for a house or some other goal? Can you count on your family to support your idea? Many times family members mean well when they try to discourage you from pursuing an idea or question your sanity, but it still hurts.

    This is so true. So many people are too afraid to live their dreams and so they are unable to be supportive of those with the courage to do so. You have to be selective of those you dream around. It’s not that you shouldn’t seek honest advice concerning the downsides but anyone who dismisses your dream should themselves be dismissed from any further discussion of it. I say, “Go for it!”

    Ugh! If I had a penny for every goal of mine I’ve reached that was shot down and disbelieved, even right up to the day it was resolved, I’d have paid off the college tuition by now.
