I buy stuff that used, especially computer hardware, because new ones are very expensive in many categories.

After finding a pair of pants I liked at Express recently (which set me back a whopping $80 after tax) I decided to seek out some additional pairs on eBay. Well, on eBay there were plenty of pairs of similar pants going for $15 - $35! So I bought the other nice pants I needed for work online and saved a bundle.

Buying secondhand is also a good way to try to find things you used to own, got rid of, and wish you hadn't.

When I shop, I always try to shop for second-hand items and they are my FAVORITE! People ask sometimes "Where did you get that?" When I say the dollar box or the salvation they are amazed. The truth is that sometimes people buy second-hand items and sell them like they are first-hand. So anyone who holds a grudge to second-hand items might just be buying them anyway without knowing it. I also like having my clothes broken in - rather than getting new color-dripping, expensive and just-as-good-as-used clothes.

Great post. I go to a lot of garage sales and find lots of great things at a cheaper price. And a lot of times these things are practicly brand new.

I think I'm like your mom - I prefer new, but I'm intrigued by arguments like yours and just might give it a try myself.

I agree with every one of your points. The items I would be wary of buying second hand are these:

Cars, air conditioners, refrigeraters, freezers, computer systems. With those items, I would tend to look more toward estate sales or moving sales and even then would wand to test the item most thourghly first. There are also consignment shops that might be considered. Again, I would want to thourghly test out the item first.

Generally though, I would more than likely buy the items mentioned above from a reliable place like Sears. I know that the initial cost is more, but what I like about Sears, for example, is their product coverage.
