For me, temping as a lifestyle has provided more than income or flexibility. It has flooded me with the most interesting experiences. Each new assignment exposes me to people I would never had approached otherwise and have interesting stories and exhibit behaviors that could serve as the basis for the next big best-seller! Artistically, my perspective on this career path has prompted me to start a blog, recording snippets of the most interesting experiences. I can't wait to see what my next job will be and where it will take me!

I'm not sure about the part-time school thing. Many employers offer their employees tuition reimbursement, and sometimes even flexible schedules for students. I'm not sure that many temp agencies do that.

"Your responsibilities will often be minimal because many companies seem to assume that temps aren’t very bright"

Uh I resent that.

You are right that temping is not always a walk in the park, and I'm glad you pointed out that there can be pitfalls, as well.

I pay close attention to my word choice when I write, hence the title "How Temping Can Be a Rewarding Lifestyle Choice" rather than "Why Temping Is a Rewarding Lifestyle Choice." Many people may have negative opinions of temping for the very reasons you mentioned, which is why I wanted to point out that it can have many advantages.

Its just me, of course, but my first impression was:

You're joking, right?

I've been a temp, I was for a couple of years. The variety and freedom are nice, but the big issue was that for a relatively competent person, it was so easy to fall into "perma temp" status, where the company likes you, you work cheap and are disposable, but you are still working at the same place day after day. In other words, the worst of all possible worlds. And its not like the temp agency is really for you either - if the host company's happy, they're happy.

I'm not saying there aren't benefits, I just haven't found it to be a "rewarding lifestyle choice". There is a strong possibility that you can be taken advantage of by two different parties. Watch it!

Both pfadvice and savingadvice are our sites...we are in the process of moving from pfadvice over to savingadvice and that is why you see the same articles on both right now.

Saving Advice is a sister site to PF Advice, so there is no cause for alarm here, but thanks for the heads up -- we do get other sites stealing our articles sometimes.

I realize that everyone's situation is different, but for a healthy person who does not have anyone relying on him or her to provide insurance, a lack of benefits isn't a major deal unless your budget is very tight. Paying health insurance premiums out of pocket for a family of 5 is another story, of course.
