Financial wake-up call Can a Penny Dropped From a Building Kill a Pedestrian Below? It’s an urban legend. A penny isn’t aerodynamically stable and they catch a lot of wind so they flutter down to the ground. To prove it, University of Virginia physics professor Louis Bloomfield made a balloon that releases pennies and tried to catch one — he failed to actually catch one, but did get hit by several including one on the chin (I sure wish I could have seen a video of that ;) )

    I don’t think that I would want to be the test subjects for any experiment where you drop things from high places and you try to catch them. It just doesn’t sound like a fun thing to do if you miss the object.

    Mythbusters already tackled this. They were able to prove that a penny dropped from the top of a skyscraper does not have enough velocity to even break the skin.
