American Express Black – The Ultimate Credit Card

American Express Black Credit CardForget the standard green and blue. Silver, gold and platinum don’t even come close. If you want the ultimate credit card, you want titanium (literally) and the color you’re after is black!

Most credit cards would be fighting tooth and nail to get you to sign up with them if you have superior credit, but there is one credit card that operates a bit differently: The Centurion Black card from American Express (also commonly referred to as the “Black Card” – there is also a Centurion Platinum card which should not be confused) The Black Card is so exclusive that you aren’t even able to apply for it – the only way to get one is by receiving a special invitation from American Express. Currently there are estimated to be less than 10,000 Black Cards in existence worldwide.

The Black Card began as a rumor in the 1980s that certain celebrities and dignitaries were being given a credit card from American Express that could buy anything with no limits (which happened to be black). There is no solid proof that the Black Card existed during this time, although some continue to insist it did exist. Either way, as rumors mounted about this exclusive black card, American Express decided to capitalize on the free publicity and launched the Black Card in 1999. Those who were first invited were Centurion Platinum card members who were supposedly spending a minimum of $150,000 a year.

Information about how one qualifies for the Black Card today is somewhat of a mystery since, although there are references on the American Express website about the card, there is no formal page where you can see the requirements to get an invitation to carry one (there is a user ID and password protected page for those that do have the Black Card). When the invitations first arrived in 1999, the Black Card came with a $1000 a year fee. People that now have the card say that the yearly cost has risen to $2500 a year and a minimum of $250,000 a year needs to be charged to qualify.

As might be expected, the invitation to receive the Black Card doesn’t come in a standard envelope that you and I are used to seeing when offering to apply for a credit card:

American Express Black Card welcome kit

And it also doesn’t come in a plain envelope when the card actually arrives:

American Express Black Card welcome kit

As would be expected, the Black Card does provide a number of privileges for the $2500 a year fee including access to a large number of exclusive clubs. Most importantly, it provides you a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week personal Concierge. If you want tickets to a sold out event, there is no need to panic. A simple call will get you virtually anything you need. How good are these? You can go to http://www.creditcardsguidance.com/ and compare them with a series of privileged credit cards that can only be called “advanced” in shadow of this black devil.

Of course, now that the American Express Black card is known to exist, the rumors have started to circulate that there is now an ultra special card for the elite of the elite called the American Express Chrystal Card…

[...] Personal Finance Advice is calling it the Ultimate Credit Card and I would be hard pressed to disagree. I don’t have one and no one I know has one which means I am travelling in the non-elite circle. That’s okay, because I don’t think I could even afford the entrance fee to this exclusive club of American Express Black card holders. Information about how one qualifies for the Black Card today is somewhat of a mystery since, although there are references on the American Express website about the card, there is no formal page where you can see the requirements to get an invitation to carry one (there is a user ID and password protected page for those that do have the Black Card). My friend has a Black Card. I had a nice story typed out about it, but since your spam filter doesn’t seem to work for me (I can add 6 and 7 thanks), I won’t re-type it.

Who cares, it’s just a freaking creadit card.
I know for sure that I would use cash even if I was really really rich.

Well, at least this card is really precious metal. I never understood why people want “golden” cards so much, when they really are of the same cheap plastic as every other card. If you like gold, buy real gold, like cold coins for christ sake!

Its not just a card, its a way of life, it is the freakin best card i have ever had. those of you who knock the card, cant afford it, but it is wonderful

For real, it isn’t as cool as you’d think. Most people have no clue what it is and usually say, “wow metal, these must be new, I’m gonna call amex and get one”. I usually just smile and say, “you should”. Compared to the Platinum card, the benefits mirror fairly close. However, one reason why I will continue my membership is Mid-elite status on all of Delta’s partners airlines. I don’t have to travel a minimum amount of miles to get Gold level (on Delta, but similar class on all others). This allows me to get upgraded on pretty much every flight. Other then that, I have rarely used the personal concierge (once to send flowers to my mom), and will never use it for private jet booking (another benefit of the Platinum as well). Again, the only reason this card is worth the large yearly fee….the airline status…and if you travel a ton like I do, it’s well worth it. Another thing, it has to be paid off in full every month, another way Amex makes sure those who hold it can afford it.
Good luck!

When I first saw this card, I had to stop and just look at it for a second. If money is power, then credit makes you untouchable. All you have is your word and this card says that your word is highly dependable amongst all. Just to be mentioned in the same breath with this card would be an honor. Until you can understand the magnitude of this piece of plastic, I suggest people refrain from writing comments.

The best credit card is one without a balance.

Bravo…

…i just heard about this card on a television program…it is so interesting…it makes me realize that human nature always strives to feel special and to belong somewhere…well…i am most impressed…good for you…i wish you all the best and most that life has to offer…

If you have nothing positive to say about the card, why are you so interested in reading about it????

Exclusive will always be the key…

they claim its 150k a year with platinum to qualify, my brother only got his after he spent 1.4 million in ’03. also when they offer you a corporate they offer a personal one as well. Although its cool to have one i don’t think my brother needs to spend the 2700 a year it actually costs, not 2500 like some claim. i found it interesting that there were still questions about the card because i simply asked my brother and he didn’t withhold any info. Also my brothers boss’ wife was so pissed that she didnt have one he called amex and they told him it wasnt possible, but when he threatened to pull all his corporate business they gave him two cards. so it can be requested…

oh yea, the limit is 6 million. so much for the no limit rumor. also my brother told me if u spend more than 100k in a day amex freezes the card until you confirm its you spending the money.

Would you want somebody to jack your card and spend 100k on an Aston Martin, verification is a good thing, unless you like filing humongous claims… By the way the card isn’t plastic, it’s made of titanium.

I know that American Express has to offer this card to the consumer. I just aquired your Gold American Express card. What I would like to know is, do you have to pay the balance in full monthly, or do you pay on this account monthly. I do understand that there is a 2500.00 yearly fee for this card. Please answer these questions for me. Finally, are there any other rewards associated with this card that are listed already?

how gives a rats ass

After working for AMEX, and working in the “Centruion” department, I find it interesting how people boast about how they have the card on here. The old saying applies, when you dont have it, you talk about it and act as though you do have it, and when you actally do have one, you really dont care as long as it does what it says it can. (And PS, fraud activity on the cards is highly monitored, and no you cant buy a vanquish or a plane using a black card)

Does anyone know how to advertise to these privilaged Black card holders?

BLACK CARD = EGO CARD. About comment 17 this isnt completely true. A good friend of mine used is “measley” platinum card to buy a Porsche. You’re right about just walking in and buying it, true you cant, but with a phone call in to Amex and telling them what he was going to do they cleared it. SO he purchased it.

The black care is total ego. I dont have one because i do pay more cash for items them credit cards but both my friends are very established and spend alot. He said he uses it like his other cards and the benefits are that much more astounding then a platinum card.

I have had the privalage to hold and swipe about 5 of thes black credit cards. I work at a lighting store in Baltimore Maryland called Jones Lighting. we deal
with the rich and famous and select lighting for there huge houses yes houses. two weeks ago i helped the guy from the show lost. LOCK. thanks

Tyler

My Dad has a black card because he owns a hotel and i can say that t is one of the best cards i have ever seen. it ISNT made of plastic as some of you people think. no it is made of TITANIUM. heavy for a credit card

how does one qualify? i am a platinum card member with outstanding membership since 1981.
please inform me. sandra

who ever says the card is ego is totally wrong its a card that gives you privelages and concierge service that are unlimited and the use of cash isnt the issue if you can purchase and pay off 250,000 a year. the card isn’t plastic its titanium and is very heavy

I don’t own one (yet) and its not m fous to hae one. Although it is my focus to have the option to own one. Regarding the previous writer who stated he would pay cash for his merchandise, he needs to realize that the elite use these cards not only for conience but also security. Its not the safest thing to carry several thousands of dollars to go shopping…..just my 2 cents

Just a little information about this card since none of you seem to know the exact details of it… The annual fee is $2500 and the initiation fee when you first receive the card is $5000; so it’s $7500 to obtain it. Minimum amount of $250,000 needs to be spent annually and yes there is a limit, but you can increase your credit limit just like any other credit card by demonstrating traits of a person with good credit. The most expensive item ever purchased on the card was a jet plane- the cost was approximately $30 million.

for all u guys that have no clue what the card is about and y it is different cause its a chip on the back for trackin device so if is get stolen it wont take mor then two min to know where it is is not only for the look but for security

To comment 22: You ca not apply for the card that the legend, however you can go to American Express website and into your account request information on The Centurion Black Card, I believe every year they have openings and they send request to whom is looking for one, however you mus know you are comfortability having to spend a minimum of 250.00 a year needs to be charged to qualify in the first place.

interesting reading….I think ill go put the lawn mower away and go to bed..I have to work in the morning

how long i have to wait for black.
i have worked hard to have assets 5m plus

Can you buy real estate
with a black card?

I work at a golf course the gentlemen that ownes a black card didn’t look like a very wealthy person he talked me down to a fair deal and as he went to pay the black card stood out he was a very nice guy and guys with that much money its nice to see they have a sense a humor and aren’t just jerks sometimes money makes mean people this guy was very nice and im glad i hooked him up if only i had that card it would be fun

About the history of the Black Card and the rumor of it starting in the 1908′s….I am a server at an exclusive resturant and my regular pays with his Black Card, but on the Card it reads ‘member since 78′. So he has had his official Black Card since 1978 before the rumor even surfaced….just putting it out there.

To comment number 32, just because it says you are a member since 78 doesn’t mean you have had a black card since 78, all american express cards say the year that you first became a member, regardless of the color or status card you received. So your guy at the restraunt may have had a green card in 78.

I am a strong advocate of the Black Card. Yesterday I walked into a Newport dealership and walked out with a brand new ’08 Lamborghini, no questions asked.

The Black Card is a great thing; however, I’m trying to understand which one has the most perks between the Black Card and the Red Card…

comment to 36 The Red American Express is to fight aids in africa 1% of your spending goes to the global fund. Also concerning the Black American Express (centurian card)We have a family business and we all have one and we travel alot so we get amazing deals at The Ritz Carlton which is part of there fine resorts program. We usually end up getting abot 300.00 off our stay for each room. My daughter also wanted to go to the American girl cafe and they were sold out but centurian got us a reservation. The benefits go on and on amazing.

It’s amazing, those who pretend that they have the card in order to arouse wonder on this site.

As far as Amy is concerned, evidently her business was not linguistics. It’s comforting to know that those who pretend to own this futile piece of ego still remain ignorant in basic grammar. Amy, it would be “their” fine resorts, not “there.” Try to charge a middle school spelling course on your next excursion.

Some day !!!

Dude this card is awsome. i take it from my dad all the time. I can get anything i want and he doesnt care. For all of those people wh think it is gay. Ur idiots, just because ur to poor to have, dont make every one else feel bad. so yeaa, plus its mad of titanium which is fricken awsome

Comment to 35, u cant apply for it, you have to be inivuted to get it.

JUST A FUNNY NOTE…MY DAUGHTER WORKS AT LOCAL CHUCK E. CHEESE PIZZA PARLOR. THIS GUY HAS A PARTY FOR A GROUP OF KIDS TOTALLING $600 AND WHIPS HIS BLACK CARD OUT TO PAY…HOW IMPRESSIVE! BUT…HE DID NOT EVEN LEAVE THE YOUNG WAITRESS A TIP FOR DOING A GREAT JOB FOR HIS GROUP! WHAT A JOKE!!

can I buy a pony with a black card…oh please say I can buy a pony!
give me a break…the black card is about prestige, respect, and wealth if you have one congradulations. if you don’t well…until they offer you one I guess its like waiting to win the lottery. its only gonna happen to a select chosen few.

wow yea, lets pay 7500 dollars to get the card, and then 2500 dollars a year to keep it in our wallets…..but the METAL is so cool!

I could care less about credit cards, waste of money, all it is is fee’s interest payments and a bunch of bullshit, OOOO concierge, woop-dee-doo. If i need to get a car, ill just pay for it in cash…

Its a status symbol, nothing more, why don’t you just try using a debit card, oh wait, you can’t, you wan’t a metal one……

Its time to grow up people. Get over your materialistic BS and realize that when you die, nothing is coming with you, i don’t plan on living my life to have “objects”, you shouldn’t either.

you suck

you are entitled to your opinion, you may think i suck, but I personally think that credit cards are a complete waste of time, it costs you more money to have a credit card, then to just use debit.

Fu#@ the Black Card

Last night I came across a situation when the person said “Do you even know who I am,” the bubble over my head said “I know, you are a jerk, an aggressive know it all, a bully etc…
At this point he pulled out his “BLACK CARD,” so…he has money, this explained the cute girl friend on his arm. I among others was not impressed. I am sorry that someone felt it necessary to point out “the card.” Who really cares, the card doesn’t make the person. He was just a jerk, with or withour the card.

well i have an additional card and that came in a plain envelope hehe

Don’t be ignorant. You can’t apply for this card. There is no link to apply. Your link does not work to apply.

You always crave what you can’t have. It was more fun spending the 250k over the last 12 months to get the card then actually having it..

Although it is pretty cool – part ego, part wanting just an unfair advantage. Upgrades and personal concierge is nice for things you need getting you couldn’t get on your own…

I work at a bookstore, and I’ve met two Black card owners at both ends of the social spectrum. The first guy I met with the card was a really laid back, polite older guy in a flannel shirt and torn jeans, buying a Johnny Cash CD (lol!). We spent time at the register comparing different artists, just talking like regular people – I didn’t even realize that he was that wealthy until (a) he pulled out his black card and (b) I got a glance at his keychain, and I swear on everything that I saw the key to a Mercedes SLR McLaren (I’m a bit of a car freak, and they had a picture of the keys to the SLR, Enzo, and Carrera GT in an old Motor Trend magazine). The other person I met with a Black card was this completely vapid, snobbish lady who gave everyone at our store a hard time because she couldn’t articulate what book she was looking for…I guess my point is that the card is just a card; it doesn’t MAKE you act like a jackass if you’re already predisposed to be a jackass. Is it worth having? Probably not, but if you have to point out all the negative/wasteful points to owning one, then you really shouldn’t worry about it anyways: you (like me) probably couldn’t afford it, and thus won’t get the offer. Would I get one if I could afford to have it? Most likely, yes: it would serve as another tool in an arsenal of tools available to me to make certain things go more smoothly. One of the earlier comments talked about getting better seats on any flight, and getting tickets to sold out venues – that’s something I think anyone would appreciate. I’d rather have the concierge put weight on the people I’m trying to get tickets (or whatever it is I want) at the regular price, than get in their faces myself and keep offering more money until they give in; definitely more efficient, and that’s what most Black card holders are really paying for. It’s no different than having a hybrid car for your commute, an suv for grocery/child-getting, and a sporty car for the weekend: you don’t NEED more than one car, but for certain things to get accomplished, one vehicle might do that job better than the others. Just my two cents *shrug*

I find it simply incredible the amount of attention this card gets. I would like to make a statement that most people with this card might be flabbergasted to hear: most people with money (or at least, as the old saying goes, old money) would reject this card, even if invited, because of the attention it gets. It is highly unnecessary, and is simply a status symbol. Money is one thing, class is another. This card is “exclusive”ly only for those who are so insecure about their wealth that they must show it off with a card. Think deeply about this: people who have money don’t spend it. I have one remaining question to all of those who carry (if there is anyone of this website who actually carrys it) the card. Why? What drove you to accept American Express’ invitation to you for this card? Was it the “coolness”, the association with wealth, the attention? Please clarify this.

People with the “black card” are no different than me, we both put our pants on one leg at a time, but once my pants are on, I then proceed to eat a bowl of 10 cent ramen noodles.

I got the card because .. yes .. the coolness. once you get the black card you join an elite group, the best of the best.

still you have to que , still nice to have.

OMG, lol, the best of the best what? its a f***ing credit card!

“the Black Ax Card” i have seen several in Scottsdale Az…as a single woman I have been privy to dinners and travel with this little black card in tow…membership has it’s privileges, is an understatement. The waiters that are handed this little titanium card certainly do recognize it, they almost always smile and have a look of understanding of the worth of the card meaning. It may be a status symbol to some, but those that have one, have earned the right to it’s ease of purchase power.

A low cut dress works just as well,…without any finance charges.

Karen,

a low cut dress to pay for dinner? Lose the anger sweetheart.Dating is not prostitution…I don’t care what card/cash they pay for dinner, I’m stating the card has it’s own stigma and like a fast car – if you can buy and own it, go for it.

No anger here “sweetheart,” and never a need to prostitute. NEVER :-)

I just got the newly launched Amex Plum Card – you get 2% back if you pay your bill within 10 days. Our company spends over $100k per month with Amex – so we will save north of $25k per year. Seems like a better deal to me then Black Card – anybody disagree?

BEST CARD ON THE WORLD

News for you rich people; no-one cares! Wow your rich and you can buy anything you want! Well that’s awesome, but it still doesn’t help your looks or your personality… HAHA LOL

I hate rich people who think they are better. I just laugh at them and they get pissed off. You can’t buy the world’s opinion of you. Good luck taking it all with you when we go

Very interesting previous comments. I simply think that if your financially able to own the black card and it would benefit you, then why not?

I use to work at a children’s clothing store for the rich and when i had my first and last encounter with the black card I was surprised there’re pretty heavy and thick, I was told that they a a tracking device in them so if they get lost or stolen they could be tracked down that’s pretty cool, you have to admit that. not to mention they look really nice, but I wouldn’t want one cause it would be dangerous in my hands even if I had all the money in the world I’d still buy up a storm just cause I could

I’m a Guinness World Record Holder and a National Celebrity! You can verify this on p.244 of the Guinness Book of World Records 2008 Edition under extreme golf. You can send my unlimited black card to:Scott McKinney 25692 Aurora way Mission Viejo,Ca..92691.Also, a reality show on the way! Thank you!

Having the lack of common sense to leave your address in a blog to get this card pretty much guarantees that you will never get one. And if you have to announce that you are a national celebrity, then you aren’t.

I deal with people holding this card every day. JUST ANOTHER LABEL

i know a couple people who have them and one is even a close relative. as for me… well i’m far from that. it’s really nothing that special considering that people nowadays can do anything for themselves simply online as for purchases. however, the concierge service is the only thing i kinda envy, but when they get you those tickets you’re paying for the service as well. a symphony ticket of 500 might cost you 2000 or more… and they also arrange all travel plans to the letter of your request. again you have to pay for the service.

someone mentioned carrying cash… that’s rediculous. a rich woman will go shopping and spend 20 grand in a trip… go ahead and tell me you’re going to carry around 20 grand in a bag. and as for the card being metallic it’s just a perk… and flashy to impress those who are that superficial.

and lastly… there is no such thing as a crystal card. but keep talking like that and there might be one day just because of the noise being made.

Most of the Black cards are held by salary types who travel and get thie expenes reimbursed. Think Law firms and bankers. It is not hard to rack up $250k in charges whn you fly business class 15-20 times a year, and stay in nice hotels, while taking clients out to dinner. Sure I would like one! the Platinum card has been great, it is worth all the cost the one time you have a problem while traveling, such as having someone hospitalized, or needing a few grand in cash, when most ATMs have a limit of $500-1000 a day.

I totally agree with number 7 lol

The problem with the card these days is that it sets of the alarms at lax and london heathrow, you have to take it out your pocket at secuity.

Let’s look at this another way — I work as a private financial advisor — four to six clients, max. If you’ve watched “Dirty Sexy Money”, well, that’s my life.

I MAKE my clients get an AmEx black, and yes, you can request them if you point out that you are charging an acceptable amount — and they’ll look at all your AmEx charges.

It’s worth it and saves them a lot of time and money. I can make one call and find anything in the world; otherwise they’re paying me by the hour to do mundane tasks that AmEx will do far more cost-efficiently. I’ve made sure they all have the same contact person, so I’m dealing with the same individual all the time; s/he know exactly what I’m looking for….. One client has a spectacular vacation home that we’re willing to rent on occasion. It goes for $10,000 a night and AmEx Black loves knowing when it’s available since they can offer an exclusive to someone looking for someplace special.

And they don’t do EVERYTHING. They have a reasonable code of conduct and won’t coordinate bribes, etc, although they can arrange for special protection/bodyguards if you’re somewhere that needs them; in Peru kidnapping is pretty much a cottage industry.

Don’t look at it as snobbery. Look at it as a way to get things done. Most of you have cars; there are places in the world where people would be appalled you don’t walk short distances. But you drive the car because you can. AmEx Black is just another step up the ladder.

Oh — and as to the posting with the rather weak command of English…yeah, chances are that kid MIGHT have one. Some parents don’t think education is very important since their kids will never “have” to work. The kids just wind up paying (and paying and paying) for it in the end. I can only do so much…

I can’t wait til I’m BLACK card and CHRYSTAL CARD STATUS!!!!!

To #40…guess what, you are too poor to own this card too. If your dad actually has this card (which is doubtful) then obviously he is too dumb to keep the card out of your grubby little hands. Enjoy the real world when it coms crashing down on you because daddy took his money away and you have to learn to work for a living…just the rest of the real world. Grow up!

OMFG!!! all of you people that have a black card and wrote somthing like ” im the best of the best or its the best thing,or My daddy loves his black card!” YOU are so dumb you waste your time it is just a populatity contest get over it everyone is gunna be sucked in to it and going to be waiting for one their whole life STOP WAITING THIS IS THE DUMBEST THING EVER !!!! GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!

Those of who keep saying it’s just a credit card seem to be missing the point. Yes it’s credit card, but that’s where it’s different from the average Visa, MC, etc. When you pay your bill off monthly there is no interest, no fee, no late fee. Holding an Amex at whatever color is better then any other card. I started as a green card holder, annual fee $25 bucks, cheaper than the interest that would have accumulated on any other card. Owning an Amex actually curbs your spending because you know that you have to pay the bill off every month. Over the years as you spend more, you get asked by Amex if you would like to step up to the next level. gold, platinum, black.
Most people who own black cards are very successful business owners who spend a lot on money each month running a business. My neighbor who owns several web-based companies has a black card. His monthly advertising bill on the web is around $100,000. He also pays his gas bill, electrical bill, office supplies, shipping bills, cable, telephone, etc. all on the black Amex totaling around a 150k a month. Instead of paying many different bills each month you pay only one. When you spend 150k a month the $2500 annual fee isn’t that much compared to the convenience. The card is a great business tool.
Then there are the perks, for spending a 150K a month or 1.8 million a year, you have now earned around 2million points. Each year my neighbor takes his family of five on vacation, fly’s first class, stays at a five star hotel, and has a rental car all for free because of the points, and he still has about five hundred thousand points left over, so that $2500 fee instead of being a negative is now a positive. I don’t know anyone that could take a family of five on vacation for two weeks and spend less then $2500 on just flying, hotels, and car rentals. When you spend that kind of money each month you want your money to work for you like a bank account and using the Amex card does that.
Yes, you can sit here and talk crap about rich people, celebrities, and their ego’s, but the majority are hard working people that got where they are because they are driven to succeed.
I am a Amex platinum card holder myself and enjoy all the perks that come with this card as well.

I serve at a not so cool or fancy restuarant so when i had a guest pay with his black card i admit i was a little star struck. Its heavy and beautiful. Maybe im shallow or i fell into the hypnosis of the whole thing but i showed everyone around me and talked about it all nite long. This card is awesome. Ppl who talk trash on this blog sound jealous and i bet you all would take one if you could. Just like everything its only a big deal bc we made it one, just like diamonds you know. I guess im just a sucker bc i think they are awesome but the downfall is i think for some is they spend so much to get it and keep it they forget how to tip. I tip better than this guy tipped me. $4 tip for a dinner for two. Come on, if you have one live up to what that card is all about.

i agree with its not all that….my dad has one and really its just like anyother credit card except its heavy and people always give me weird looks when i go to like jack in the box or taco bell!!!! reall guys anyone who thinks they are all that because they have ona are lame so what they arent that hard to get if my dad can get one and there just a credit card god

Well…….we don’t have one, we don’t even have a cc as a matter of fact. As the old saying goes if you hang out with those who never have money, you’ll never have money. So since the majority of our friends have their own business maybe ours will take off like theirs and we will be a part of the elite. So as for everyone else the card just gives you something to shoot for. If that’s too much to grasp, chug down another glass of haterade!! I’ll see ya when I hand you my card.

just got one today it felt so good to recieve this wonderful card it makes you feel very special

all these people who knock this card is because they can not get one believe me when i use this card in different places people treat you much different

when will i get my black card i spend about 1,000 dollars a year max…and i still haven’t received mine..

#53

I accepted the invitation for the centurion, simply because – like others have mentioned – it gets things done, and quickly at that.

It’s not about the supposed ‘exclusivity’ or ‘prestige’ of it. It comes down to what it provides on a day by day basis.

The fees, while higher than some, are not exorbitant – taking into account what it is that you receive, and really at the end of that day, isn’t that the trade off? You get what you pay for..

Those that have said that they would just pay cash, obviously don’t quite understand the convenience factor. It is, for the most part, about security.

You just can’t walk around with hundreds of thousands of dollars, you can’t take those risks in financial transactions, where you’re passing hands with millions of dollars, it never ends well. Not with the state that safety online is in these days.

As someone has mentioned, the points scheme also makes it worthwhile. When you have to travel multiple times in a week – great distances – especially when you fly privately, you burn through money in a simply ridiculous fashion. So why not try to compensate in some manner.

The black card, for me, is not a personal statement, as some who have procured it might believe it to be.. it is simply an aid to do what I need to be done.

Is it difficult to get the platinum-card when you dont have the right income that they need?……

Can you tell me why we haven’t been offered the “black card”. Surely, you know how much we “spend” so I am wandering just “how much” you must spend to be “offered one”????

I saw one “black card” last year, I had that “pleasure”. I work in a big bulidig si We share the facility with some mayor Creative adv. agencies in US. So I saw a lady paying her 20 dollars lunch with one of these unique and distintive cards.
Her job?: “Amex: the card speaks for yourself”

everyone knows that if you have a black card you also have a big penis…

Everyone who says what is the point of the card or that people who have them are snobs and shit dont actually have a brain to understand that they are just jealous. i have had a card since i was 15 and just because you have one of these cards it doest mean that you are a snob. everyone just needs to wake up and realise that yes some people have you doors open to them and therefore are able to have more opportunities than others. so please STOP moaning and bitching about other people that do have the card!!!!!!

haha its the greatest card in the world… this websight dosn’t do justice to it

10,000 Black Cards X $2,500 = $25,000,000 in card fees alone. Then there’s the “float” and the card holders all pay. Wow! Big bucks – little risk.

Congradulations AMEX.

To Comment 40 Their is no way that you take your daddy’s centurion card and use when ever you want I have a Black card and my kids have tried to use it any well the first time they tried to use the police were called and put in custody until I showed up to bail them out. So easy way of fixing that problem i gave them there own……

one day she will be mine … oh yes !

I appreciate the fact that status is desirable in this day and age but I have to say if you are human and I know you all are there is always something in everyones life that is priceless and no matter what credit card you have or how much money you have money cant buy true happiness . what is that one thing that is priceless to you ??? Is it someone you no longer have in your life ?? Is it someone you have in your life right now ??? I know most people would answer yes and then my question to you . is the card that important or would you give it up for that thing in your life for what you find priceless. If you say no then you most certainly dont deserve the card or any money for that matter . We as a society need to realize that status, money , and satisfying ourselves is really selfish and takes away from the good we can do for others with or without money and ultimately I think we should be more concerned with defining success as the number of peoples lives we have improved and touched other than our own, rather than how much we have accomplished ,how much money we have or what credit card we carry .

out of curiosity, and perhaps someone has already answered this, if it’s thicker than a normal credit card how can it swipe in a machine?

such shame how people feel superior than others just becuase they have a nice piece of plastic in thier wallet! people who tihnk they just landed! what is the world coming to !

I work and own a golf store in the mountains of western North Carolina and surprisingly I see at least two Black cards a week. They actually do feel different from the regular plastic cards.
Every person that I have helped with the black card has been very nice and down to earth. To comment on 97 most of the people who have these cards are older, established and have earned this card through hard work.

I found a black card one time and thought it was fake because it was metal. It was in the NY Knicks locker room, That’s when I first knew about it. I got one too now. Good card but being an NBA player has much better perks. Later.

My boyfriends has a well deserved black card, and yes it sometimes is hard to swipe through machinest it can be done. You don’t need to have perfect credit, but very good credit is required and you can call American Express to request this card. What American Express asked for is that you do spend well over $100,000 per year on this card. The way to get it is not that hard (if you make the money). Simply request any AE card, use it and pay perfect on it for at least a year, then simply call AE up and request a black card. It ally is that easy. The fee for the crd at this time is $2500. As for the perks…they still come at a price as well. Hard to get items?? Expect to pay double if you use their service to purchase it. Example, we wanted a WII for a child during X-mas. These were hard to find at the time, so he called AE and that’s it!! We got it overnight. The thing is he paid twice the price for it. This card is unlimited, but there are business cards out there that offer better more realistic perks. Half the time that we use it, cashiers simply take a closer look at it and just keep look at him. And by the way..people with real money, never carry cash. I know a few millionaires and they all have that same thing in common.

I find it humorous on how many people claim to have this card, especially since only 10,000 or so are known to exist.

I used to work for Sharper Image and I have run across 2 customers with this card. One was from Australia, and the other from the United States. All I can say is the first time I felt that card, it was a feeling of power. Then swiping the card, very smooth swipe. I actually almost dropped the card the first time I held it because I didn’t realize it was made out of titanium.

I will never be able to afford to have that card, but I’m envious of those who do have them. As for the two gentlemen that held the card, both were classy and I helped carry their purchases to their cars. Both of them gave me a nice tip (who said rich people are all snobs) and surprisingly enough when they returned they always asked for me.

I haven’t had any problems with anyone using the black card, but then again they they highest they spent was 5K at Sharper Image.

I saw this referenced at SubliminalMessages.Com and just wanted to say that if I win the Powerball tomorrow, this will not be something I would want to waste any money on. Basically, it tells robbers to follow you home and tells merchants to try to rip you off. Not the message I’d like to share with my waiter.

Hmm..So, I guess “Black” is better!

I am concerned over the grammatical as well as spelling errors these wealthy card holders are showing us. I understand a type-o, but just plain old illiterate are some of you! Who do you think you are fooling(smile) Well I am a “Blue” AMEX carholder with only a limit right now of $11,000. I am not required to pay the full monthly balance but when I can, I do. I have not charged more than about $1,000 in one month. I understand the convienience of having “any” credit or debit card today. If I were invited to apply for the “BLACK” Amex card someday I would go for it, since that would only mean one thing I can afford to have it! I smile at the I “own” the black card comments, right away I know they do not since you “hold” the “BLACK” cards not “own” them. Always BET on BLACK!

How about a “Platinum Plus’ for those who have supported AE for many years? – I’ve been a member since 1965 and spend between $25,000 & $40,000 p/y.

Raise my yearly fee and offer some perks…

Well, off to China all on AE!

selling sharpie’s, seems to be the place!

My dad has an Amex Black Card. He owns a shipping company and has had Amex Gold cards given out to all of his employees all linked to him as the main card holder. He holds the Black Card. He’s had it since the card was introduced back in 1999. It came in a large case with booklets and the card is made of titanium and is heavy. Sometimes it has trouble swiping at gas stations as it is a bit thicker than your typical plastic card. He gets a lot of benefits and flies a lot. The card gets him upgraded to first/business class every time he flies.

He’s been with Amex for over 30 years. I have a Plat Card myself and have been a card holder for over ten years. Great service.

I work at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, where the LA Galaxy play and someone, a guy, bought tixs at my window. he gave me his card and it was this black american express card. once he handed it to me i knew this was not a plain jane card. it had a heavy set to it and seems like made of metal. i handed it back and told him i like your card. he said thanks and i give him his tixs, didnt check the name.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week personal Concierge. i would use this service all day all night if i was ever invited….hahaha…. good stuff tho bro…

I too put my pants on just like the rest of you…however after I put my pants on I make gold records…

I Work for American Express now there is the black card now the American Express Chrystal Card I havn’t heard any wind of….

i knew a friend who paid

I dont need this card to pick up chicks, ya old bastards! jk. cool if you have, cool if you dont!

There is an easy way to get this card. If you have currently a Platinum use it for everything you do and buy. American Express see the trafic created and sometimes depending on the traffic they will invite you to join – invitations soemtimes waiver the first year subscription fees too!
So you can knock yourself out with the card for a whole year before committing to it!

But once you have it – you really do not want anything else in your wallet!
It really does make shopping easy. with a back up second to none!
Their concierge service is brilliant!

The Black Card has tremendous “snob appeal” thats for sure but it’s not the be all to end all card. That distinction goes to the Amex Chrystal Card which is the ultimate ego card.
I have either but I do have a Visa with a high spending limit. I tried to purchase a new car on it last year but the dealer refused it because he didn’t want to pay the 3% merchant fee to VISA. I seriously doubt if he would have accepted the Black AMEX either…so much for “snob cards”.

The Black Card in EU and then especially in The Netherlands is different then it’s US counterpart when it comes to privilages like the concierge and “no expending limit” option. In the Netherlands the concierge is a typical helpdesk in the Netherlands wich informs you about what can or can’t be done with the card and some basic help regarding reservations. Regarding spending: Don’t think you can go to some broker and say ” hey i wanna buy this house, charge the 1000.000 US dollar to my Black Card like in the US cause in the Netherlands it has a limit. So..what is the real benefit of a black card in the Netherlands compared to it’s platinum counterpart? Hardly any so..i gave mine back last year after 3 years with this card and kept the platinums ones (Mastercard/Visa/AAA/Diners etc)

My Mum’s got a Black American Express card. It’s soooo pretty. I love it. I use it all the time as does she, haha.
Everybody here who is hating on the Black Card are just jealous because they can’t have one.
IT’S NOT JUST A CARD.
Grow up.

my mom has one. yay me!!

Hello, My name is Patrick and I recently became very wealthy and obtained a Black Card. At 23 i would have to say this is the greatest investment I have ever made.(Besides f.griffin)Also, I recently bought a 2006 Corvette Z06 with it at $67,000 no problem. I made a couple of purchases in one day equaling $129,000 in February. My card was frozen and I freaked out. I do believe the limit on my card is 10m but I am not sure, I do not plan on maxing it out so no worries about that!

i have served two people who paid using the black card. it feels awesome!

Well I do have one (UK based) and it is not worth the new

Today I obtained a Black AMEX card for $5000 plus $2500 in Canada. The famous Centurian Card.

What a rip off. Anyone who gets this card needs to know that in Canada, at least, it is only a very expensive Platinum card. My story is as follows:

After I registered I wanted to book some travel and was transferred to what I thought was Centurian Travel Services. I was on hold for over 30 minutes and finally hung up. I finally(after 60 minutes) received a phone call from someone in Platinum Travel. I phoned the return number and found out that there is really no such thing as Centurian Travel, but it is really just the same group that services Platinum Travel members. If they are busy you get the same priority as Platinum members.

Why pay $2500 for the same service that you get for $400 with the Platinum card. The whole Centurian thing, at least in Canada is a ripe off and invited Platinum Card holders should be careful. It is a money grab, as you do get not better service, at least in travel then Platinum members.

I have been an AMEX member since 1986 and am going to cancel my Centurian and Platinum membership. I think that AMEX is basically going broke with the whole credit crisis and now duping long Platinum members like myself to get additional fees to cover there losses.

I am President of a Construction that uses AMEX cards and I will be talking to our UK Owners immediately to rely this story. We have 45000 employees, which use AMEX corporate cards. Time to go to VISA.

You have been warned!

I have been an Amex member since 1980 and received my Centurion card in 1999. You certainly have to pay off your balance every month but you do not need to spend 250K a year. Amex is alot stricker than they used to be regarding membership. The card does open many doors othewise closed to the regular user. A great many perks are available. But if you flash it at a resturant or Hotel very few younger staff people realize what it is. If you’ve worked hard during your lifetime and happen to blessed with some wealth no bit of plastic is needed to remind you of your life’s journey.

just recieved my black card about one year ago and help to have one guys it is a great card

comment 24….you have no amex black. you cant even spell haha

Just got mine today!

I used to flash my platinum card, wear a 15k Rolex as well as others ( well I still do on a few occasions ).
But after a business associate of mine was kidnaped in Columbia and never heard from again, after I was followed home twice from clubs until I got to my driveway gates, after some really creepy people were all of a sudden trying to befriend me at golf courses-conventions-etc. all in one year… I realized that my insecurity about what others may think of me may cost me my life. In this economy I am now enjoying being humble and ‘fitting in’. The perks are there when I need them but the card is hidden behind a colored card in my wallet from now on.

Meanwhile back in reality… corporate mind control is alive and well. Let me get this straight – you paid 7.5k for a card that requires you pay it off every month, that requires you to continue to pay each year, that requires you to pay 1.5k per ea. extra card, that requires you to spend 250k per year after you gave them 7.5k for a monochromatic metal card ?! But oh the perks !- 1) attract Ho’s that can out scheme you any day of the week – 2) tell hot educated women that you are deeply insecure – 3) guarantee being kidnapped in a foreign country because you flashed your card – 4) enjoy having your time wasted by what only a hillbilly would consider real concierge service ( for only 1k a year you can sign up for outstanding concierge service by dedicated vendors ) – 5) let service know that it’s not only ok but fun to spit in your food before they bring it out – 6) let everyone who knows you have the card think it’s ok to charge you more or quote you more or expect a much bigger tip for standard service – 7) make you a preferred target for all criminals and con games in your own country… and on and on. This is status ? If it is -you have an odd concept of what self respect is.
The only issue here is that Amex is praying on your insecurity. Anyone of real wealth has assistants doing everything for them already and their accountants that would never approve this ridiculous expense as a form of payment. If your a Paris Hilton type then yes it fits your fake life(style) – her business is selling young fools on consumerism. Corporate brainwashing is indeed complete – that’s why people pay for shirts and hats that advertise other companies products. If I’m spending 250k per year using a magnetic strip the company issuing that thin mylar film better kiss my a** and pay me at least 2.5k a year for my business. Your only impressing weak minded sycophantic trash.

I recently received an invitation for this card, read what the membership fee was, and threw it in the garbage. I have no idea why the invitation was sent to me because I don’t spend $250,000/yr nor do I travel enough to take advantage of those services. I agree with Dan, the best credit card is one without a balance…

Quoting post number 55: “I got the card because .. yes .. the coolness. once you get the black card you join an elite group, the best of the best.”

You mean “wealthiest”, not “best”. Wealth does not automatically make one the “best”. There are very wealthy “decent” people and there are very poor “decent” people. There are also very poor “a$$holes”, and there are very wealthy “A$$holes” I’ve met plenty of both. I have no time for the latter – wealthy or not.

I have been an american express customer for years. I just inherited $25million dollarws and would like to take advantage of the balck card.

I think the creation of the Centurion card was a wonderful thing. I certainly intend to own one eventually. What I don’t understand though is the attitudes of some people on this site. If you can’t afford to have a Black card, that’s fine, but why are you so bitter towards others who can? That type of bitterness is very sad and very pathetic.

Second, for those on here who claim to have Black cards, I don’t doubt that some of you may have them. . . but some of you are lying. And if you aren’t lying, then it is frightening to know that some of you hold a Black card, but write as if you left school after the third grade. There is something to be said for having acceptable grammar and writing skills. Everyone makes the occasional typo. Everyone makes the occasional spelling error. However some of you have written posts that are close to being illegible. Yet you claim to have a Black card.

And of course there are those posts that clearly show that the writer does not have a Black card, but is instead just hiding behind a facade on the Internet and pretending to have one. What’s the point? No one knows you unless you provide your name and address. Stop the lies. It is very pathetic and sad.

Hello…..Information about how one qualifies for the Black Card today is somewhat of a mystery since, although there are references on the American Express website about the card, there is no formal page where you can see the requirements to get an invitation to carry one (there is a user ID and password protected page for those that do have the Black Card). When the invitations first arrived in 1999, the Black Card came with a $1000 a year fee. People that now have the card say that the yearly cost has risen to $2500 a year and a minimum of $250,000 a year needs to be charged to qualify. .

LMFAO. I uderstand it if the card benefits you in a way where you need to fly every week and then you can get easy upgrades and such, but if you don’t do a lot of travelling then this card is a joke. I mean, instead of giving AMEX $2,500 or more, why don’t you use that money to get some real platinum or gold. I mean why waste that money? To brag to your friends? As for me I just have a simple AMEX card through AMEX/Costco that only costs $100 a year and a platinum VISA! That’s right. I said, “VISA!”

I am interested to aplly for black america express card. I know it is with invitation only. if you would be kind enough to tell me, what are requirment to thanks in advance..

Mr M R A Talukder

The next to this card is the titanium card. I have one, it’s vryheavy and can’t snap etc. The fees are excessive but the perks are cool! Any airport in the world you get a limo to hotel etc. Great travel insurance. Etc! No crystal card tho, sorry!

I came accross this site by accident and could not believe the crap i am reading who has time for all this. You might just say the same thing about me but let me tell u right now any one on this site claiming to have the black card is lying. I am not boasting but i have money and family with more and none of them have time for this and neither should u thats if you are really rich. . .

Wow…what a good post…getting comments for over 3 years!
I agree that those that have it, do so for an ego thing. I can’t say I blame them…. and those that are ragging on those that have it….they ARE jealous, otherwise they wouldn’t bother to even comment.

Hi everybody,
There is a dedicated website for the Centurion card.
Can you give a valid ID and Password?
Thanks

I read most of these comments. I guess spending for a good cause is the best for the card. I hope the company (with all the collected fees and what else is hidden)donates some points to the poor countries. Just a thought.

The black card is the only card i use now days. I can buy anything i want without being asked questions or being declined because of the card limit. I can put millions of dollars on my card without any problems

According to Journal International, the average age of a Centurion reader from Europe or the Middle East is 49 years. 94% of primary cardholders are male and they have an average of 3.3 properties. Their average household income is

The minimum net worth in liquid cash is $2.5 Million. I was an invited Platinum card member. Original cost was $300 a year and that went to $1,000. The Black Centurion minimum expenditure IS about $250k per annum.
The fee is varied depending on how long and how you were solicited/invited or you initiated the request. Like the Platinum, the Black has myriad fringe benefits, such as entree’ to membership only private clubs, hotels, guest residencies and much much more. It is also a walking credit reference for huge purchases, even houses.

I have held a Centurion card since 2000. I was invited because I started a company in a basement that grew to be a very successful with offices in 3 countries and was later acquired. I’ve earned everything that I have and started with nearly nothing but an education that I paid for myself.

Here are a few observations.

1) Originally, the Centurion card was by invitation only. It required $250,000 per year spending and also required a certain status (CEO, actor, etc.) The spending requirement was never $150,000 or some of the other numbers posted on this site.
2) The original annual fee was $1,000. That fee remained the same for existing card holders for several years. Then it increased to $1,500 and now is $2,500 for the original owners. People who receive their first card in later years pay more than the original card holders. Apparently, the current annual fee is $5,000.
3) American Express markets the card’s “status”, but the value of the card is in the perks: airline elite status, hotel elite status, airport lounge memberships, free rental car elite status, special event invitations, free gifts from American Express, etc. (For example, American Express has sent digital cameras, $500 gift cards to stores like Salvatore Ferragamo, etc. They just show up in the mail.)
4) The travel benefit is bogus. The same travel desk serves Platinum and Centurion card holders. They just answer the phone differently if you dial the Centurion number.
5) The card does have a very high spending limit. However, that’s not what causes the card to be “frozen” when you attempt to buy a Porsche. All American Express cards track spending patterns. They will question the charge if you make a large purchase that deviates from your typical spending pattern.
6) The “status” of the card quickly wears off and the attention can be embarrassing. Who cares if some teenaged cashier makes a fuss about the card? The only time the card’s status has value to me is in certain business settings.
7) There is a certain “convenience” factor, but only because my assistant plans all of my travel through the “Centurion” travel service.

ok i dont know what the big deal is. My dad has had one ever since i can remember. well i guess 13 years cuz thats how old i am

I’ve had one for about 4 years now, it was stolen a few months back but thanks to its internal tracking device it was recovered, I had no idea it even had this technology built in.

Never have been impressed by credit cards and I’m not impressed with the Centurion. Don’t say I cant afford it, because I make plenty and spend plenty more. Checks are the only way I do business and for the people that must have such a card, it doesn’t prove a thing. They are not special, just need to feel special. Here’s lookin’ at you Mr. Lombard. ; )

American Express Black…although good..is having a lot of trouble in these economic times…it reads credit reports from 6 months back and if you have a lot of activity..ie refinancing a 2million business loan and clearing up debt, disputing and litigating hospital bills, applying for more credit cards and more credit….paying off your balance early and paying more than you owe….it sends the staff and the monitoring computers into a tail spin. I have two black cards and run 20 of my businesses thru them…I do not expect to have my limit decreased to $1000 just because I payed them off early and had this activity which should have had a positive impact! Until they get their act together…I will be dieting on Platinums of Visa and MC…they may not have an unlimited budget but I can pay them off 20r3 times a month!! With an operation budget in the millions you would think they would fly their ass over to Thailand and straighten this out.
All my empoyees have Platinum Amex card that run thru the Blacks!
Not happy or please with the Black!
Count me trying to deal with Amex in Thailand where only 1 in 50000 business even know what it is..musch less honor it!
The banks here close at 330 every day and for the weekend on Friday…they reopen on Monday at around 9-10am but all the banks and credit card systems in the USA are at least 13hr earlier which means it will be Tuesday before Amex or the US banks will be able to do anything for me and the banks will close in two more days on Friday.
Try dealing with that!!

Oh just so we all know..very large purchases trigger AMEX to track your spending. I paid payroll using my AMEX Gold on June, July and August of 2010 and I received a phone call asking me to sign up for a black card. The payroll amount each month was 36,544. I have not spent that much since then…maybe average 8,200 on it monthly. Ohhhh and let’s get this right!! You can’t go to a car dealership and use an AMEX. They flat out refuse!! They don’t want to pay the 3% fee AMEX charges them especially for a car over 75k. One more thing all AMEX cards have a limit. The no limit ones take an average of what you spend on it and that is your limit.

Well I have read this article and many of the comments. I do not know the last time i laughed so hard. Apparently everyone who owns a Black card has commented on this page. Where do you jackasses get off on lying about owning this card? It is a very interesting card but no one wants to hear your bs.

A Black Card is the ultimate in snobbishness. But then, if you want to be snobbish – and we all do to some extent – then you should work hard to be able to afford one!

What is puzzling me is why would i want to give away 2500 dollars a year just to have a card. I don’t knock the card but i just don’t get paying that much money for something. I would rather just give 2500 a year to family or someone that need it. Maybe i just have a good heart, I don’t know.

I am a realist and a future carrier of your card. My plans and goals will require such a card and it will be fun to use it when I travel around the world 1st class structuring health and education systems for children and young adults! When I’m ready, I’ll be in touch for that card! Thanks!
