On the other side, I have a few thoughts on the "responsible" side (as opposed to the irresponsible" side of investing.

There is something in the motivation behind socially responsible investing that I just have to question. To me, it's just a way for the large brokerage houses to add yet another specialty product that may perk the ears of a would-be investor and bring them one step closer to depositing their hard earned money. Investments are investments. Making something "socially responsible" tugs at the emotions and emotions really don't belong in the investment world. Socially responsible investment funds are a SCAM. There, I said it.

There's actually a mutual fund out there for this type of investing. It's called the Vice Fund and can be found at http://www.vicefund.com/. It looks like the returns are pretty good for a mutual fund. There's also a "Blue Fund" for companies with a more socially responsible tilt.
Personally, I don't buy into the "Blue Fund" idea. Sure, companies that operate sustainably are much better for the world. But you are investing emotionally if that's the basis for your investment.
