Finding other outlets where food is sold can save you money and introduce you to different varieties of fruits and vegetables that you won’t find in the grocery store produce section.

Farmers’ markets are an excellent source of fresh local produce. Since the produce sold at these markets are locally grown, they tend to be much fresher compared to grocery store produce that has been shipped thousands of miles. The local produce also tends to be less expensive that produce in the grocery store since you are purchasing it directly from the grower and there are no middle men to pay.

    Good tips for shopping the local farmers’ market. Here in the PacNW, we have local markets several times a week. One tip I would add to ensure best produce for the lowest cost: choose the produce at peak season. Right now that means spinach, kale, lettuce, snap peas and new potatoes. Although some items like fresh basil are available, it’s greenhouse grown and expensive.

    This is a great tip. I’ve also read that it’s always less expensive wherever you buy your produce to buy what is in season. If it’s not in season, it’s going to cost you more wherever you buy it. Produce tastes better in season too. Simple advice but true.
