When I started to add satellite sites, I thought that National Condom Week would be one of the big winners in the group. I had a tie in with credit card condoms and it was just quirky enough that I thought it would catch one. I fell into the trap that I thought it would sell itself and because of that, it has failed miserably. While there were over 500 of articles written about National Condom Week this month, none of them linked to our site. Where I had hoped that the satellite sites would bring in about $30 a month, this site has failed to bring in $20 in total in the past 3 months. It’s been a big disappointment and obvious failure — and I can only look at myself in the mirror to know why.

My first big misstep was not giving any publicity to the site. I could have given it quality publicity without spending any money. What I should have done is sent out a press release the week before the event highlighting the history of condom week as the main part and then a bit about credit card condoms and debt reduction to round it out. I failed to do that becasue I thought people would find the site on their own. I should know better about that at this stage of the Internet game.

Since it is an event mainly celebrated on college campuses, I should have also included a nice run down of statistics in relation to college and debt that could have easily been incorporated into any articles being written.

Lastly, I should have sent the press release not only through the normal fashion, but I should have also obtained a listing of all college newspapers and sent the press release directly to the editors there.

Had I done these three things, I bet that the website would have had a decent amount of traffic the last couple of weeks and probably would have brought in a decent amount of money. While obviously I won’t lose any money on the site this year, it could have been so much better if I had not been as lazy. I knew what the steps were to make is succeed and I just didn’t execute. I have nobody to blame but myself.

Now that the plan is written down for all to see, if I fail again next year you can all really let me have it…

lol – it was actually seeing your post that got me thinking about the site and how I had really dropped the ball on this one.

You should have sent me an email! Not that I have a huge following or anything, but the more people who write about it, the more chance you would have in getting picked up by a major media outlet.

Amazing! You are in 3rd place for the key words.

    Better luck next year
