Internet Connection Solved

We have had a problem with our Internet connection for the last 6 months. Most of the time it works, but there would be periods where it would go out for hours, even days, and we couldn’t gain access. It was frustrating to no end, especially since my job is essentially being on the Internet.

Trying to find the problem was a never ending circle. We’d call the Internet provider and they would say it was the phone company’s fault. We call the phone company and they would say it was the service provider’s fault. Finally we got so frustrated that we called them both out at the same time to figure out what the problem was.

    I had a similar problem with the phone company and the DSL provider pointing the finger at each other. In this case, the phone company was the DSL provider but a sub-division.

    After a few calls to each division and getting the run-around, I was finally sent a technician to look at my problem. I was not at home at day but when I did get home, I was happy to find out that the internet connectivity problem appeared to be corrected. But in fixing the problem, the technician swapped out my DSL modem for what was supposed to be a new device. Well this newer device looked like it had been dragged behind the van for a few blocks. So I had them come out again to replace this device. While working to fix our problem, I noticed the technician did some work on the phone box outside our place. The cover to that box was now missing.

    All was good until the first rain when all of a sudden not only was my internet connectivity acting up again but my phone line was having problems as well. I was receiving phone calls for someone else and they were getting ours. The only way I was able to get connected to the internet was to take the phone on and off hook. I would then have connectivity for a couple hours before having to do it again. I assume this problem started because that cover to our phone box was missing. So after a few more calls from myself and the person receiving our calls, we got everything fixed.

    When I moved the next year, I decided to give cable internet a try since I wasn’t internet in dealing with the DSL provider again. Funny thing is that now that I have moved again, I am trying to get the DSL setup but having issues once again! Oh well.

    Why don’t you give Hikari-fibre a try? I used to have Usen Hikari fibre and it is faster than ADSL for around 5000 yen a month (it could even be cheaper now).

    We have Hikari-Fibre. That was one of the things that was so frustrating – we changed because we were having so many problems with dial up and then this happens. At least there have been no problems the last 12 hours :)

    Have you considered getting two internet lines? I wouldn’t put up with that… I don’t know how it is in Japan, can you get DSL and Cable Internet or some sort of Wireless Hi-Speed?

    Unfortunately, the expense would be prohibitive. One of the problems of living in a foreign country is that you can’t always demand the same things you would in the US and learning to work the system takes a lot of time and study.
