It was also the first time for me to hear of Black Friday this year. Internet sales up 4o per cent is fantastic news for web site developers.

It confirms that people are starting to see the convenience of shopping on the net and also building confidence using their credit card to do online shopping.

Cyber Monday is a recently invented marketing tool. Black Friday has been around for more than 10 years. Black Friday has made a number of different claims over the years, all of which are myths. The most popular one is that it is the busiest shopping day of the season, but it also claims that it's the day when most retailers go from "in the red" to "int the black" which is also a myth (I don't remember where I saw the analysis, but when retailers actually go into the black is greatly influenced by their industry and other factors, not on one shopping day of the year). The media also likes to say Black Friday will determine the fate of the shopping season, but this one doesn't hold true either. Will try and find those other analysis and post them here.

Black Friday doesn’t technically refer to the largest shopping day of the year; it refers to the day that the majority of retailers profits go into the black.

Interesting post. I don’t recall ever hearing the terms Black Friday and Cyber Monday until this year. The news media do have a knack for creating news where none exists.
